The Churches of the Brethren in Indiana have a long and rich tradition of serving older adults. It all started in 1889, when the ministry was established in Mexico, IN, to care for orphans as well as older adults. In 1942 the children’s department was closed and the focus shifted to older adults.

The 1950s proved to be a significant decade, as the Board of Trustees was faced with a tough decision. It was determined their buildings could not be adequately renovated to meet changing regulations. Ultimately the Board of Trustees voted to close the home at Mexico and build a new retirement community in North Manchester.

It was the beginning of a new era for the church in Indiana; this time in North Manchester. Timbercrest opened its doors in March of 1968 to the residents transferring from the Mexico Home. In response to these needs, Timbercrest became a modern retirement community boasting several levels of accommodations and care. Timbercrest continues to evolve and meet the changing needs of current and future residents.

Today Timbercrest has stayed true to its ministerial roots, continuing as a not-for-profit charitable organization. It can be said Timbercrest has come a long way from the operation that began in Mexico, Indiana in 1889. However, its Christian heritage and values laid the foundation for the work that continues today.
