Talking About Community Living

Initiating a conversation with a loved one about moving to a life plan community can be difficult. Consider the following tips to help ease the conversation.

Prepare

Doing initial research before speaking with your loved one will help you feel more prepared and better able to explain senior living options.

Respect Autonomy

Be ready to listen to your loved one’s concerns. Everyone should have a voice in the conversation and feel respected and heard.

Consider the Right Timing

Choose a time to talk when you and your loved one are well rested, alert, and not overly stressed.

Seek Out Support

Consider inviting a trusted third party to join in the conversation, such as a family physician, clergy member, or family friend.

Respect the Process

Don’t expect to reach a decision right away. Many people discuss senior living options over the course of several meetings, so allow your loved one time to reflect and absorb information.
